Ankle Sprains common among athletes
Sprained ankles are common injuries suffered by athletes. They generally occur due to an inversion injury of the ankle. Symptoms include ankle pain and swelling. Severe ankle sprains should be reviewed by a Foot and Ankle specialist to rule out severe damage or tears of ligaments and tendons.
Another type of sprain is called a high ankle sprain. When a high ankle sprain occurs there is generally soft tissue damage to the ligaments of the joint between the Tibia, otherwise known as the shin bone, and fibula, also known as the splint bone. High ankle sprains should be reviewed by a Foot and Ankle specialist.
The early stages of treatment of ankle sprains involving soft tissue and ligament damage when no bone injury has occurred usually include the P.R.I.C.E. (Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.)
